2 din android 5.1 autoradio |
Hardware
Seems to be solid. The unit is lighter than traditional mainstream head units probably due to a lack of CD/DVD player. The screen is pretty nice. The resolution is perfect for driving and the capacitive touch is responsive and reasonably accurate. You can tell it's not quite as sensitive as a normal tablet but during driving, that's probably for the better. The plastic cover is, well, plastic and it's held on with four screws. You can basically remove the front cover and work with the guts if you wanted to. The buttons on the front seem solid enough and they are backlit when you have your lights on.
The back of the unit has a bunch of ports/options. There's the antenna (motorola style) and GPS connectors along with the standard wiring harness for speakers, power, antenna/external amp, etc. The nice thing about this unit is that has pre-amp outs for all four speakers in addition to a set for an incoming signal (RCA in L&R), video in and video out (for headrest video), and a mono sub RCA (a single RCA for mono-channel out. You can get a splitter if your amp requires two RCAs in...worked great for me). There are two long female USB cables for adding storage, etc. and a 3.5mm microphone in which is provided. If you have resistive steering wheel controls the wiring harness has two "key" wires for that. You do NOT need to buy something like the ASWC-1! The unit has built in Bluetooth and WiFi which seem to work fine.
Software
The unit comes with Android 5.1 which is good enough for most modern apps. The interface to the unit is pretty nice and thus far I have been able to install all the apps I would have wanted from the Google Play Store. Waze, Google Music, Google Maps, Yelp, Torque (installed by default), etc. The unit comes with a number of custom apps that seem to work pretty well. The Radio app is pretty legit and gets local stations well. There is a really nice steering wheel programmable app that basically lets you press a steering wheel button and select which feature you want to map it to. Really nice and easy to use. Additionally, there are things like a file browser, input/src switcher, video player, and other things like that. All-in-all pretty solid offering for default/installed software and the freedom to install what you want.
Sound
I'm actually pretty impressed with the sound. I'm not a super sound junky but I've always been into car audio and the output is pretty nice. It has a software EQ which seems to work well though the default presets are kind of weak. For my setup, because I got the upgraded audio from the factory (built in amp and sub and H/K speakers) I ended up wiring the pre-amp outs to my harness which lead directly into the car's amp and sub. I also used the unit's mono sub RCA which goes to my RF P300-10. Overall a very great sounding setup. It may not be as nice as the $1000 mainstream units out there but I'm sure not many can tell the difference.
Installation
Very easy and straightforward installation. You really do need to know what you are doing though. There are no instructions aside from a color print out of the ports and 1-2 words telling you what each wire is for. If you have never installed an after-market HU and you are going to do this on your own...you might want to get it professionally installed or get an experienced friend to help. Having said that, this unit is slightly larger than the normal double DIN. I had to sand down the dash kit to make this unit fit and the side mounting holes are somewhat off. Most mounting kits will be plastic so it's not too big of a deal to sand/cut to get the fit but just know that it's not perfect especially width wise.
Overall
Overall, this is an awesome deal for people who want android functionality in their cars and don't want to shell out >$500 for a crippled Android Auto unit. What the mainstream manufacturers are charging for the neutered units they are selling is almost criminal. While this unit is not quite prefect, it's pretty close and for the price paid, you really cannot get better. As long as you are a bit of a hacker at heart this unit is perfect."
